Does your child struggle with jaw pain? Do they complain of frequent headaches in the morning? Are they more self-conscious about their appearance? While it may be tempting to seek help for the symptoms they’re experiencing, it’s essential that a dentist or orthodontist get to the root of the problem, especially if it pertains to their mouth. Keep reading to find out how orthodontics can be helpful when it comes to treating an array of oral health issues.

Can Orthodontics Treat Enamel Erosion?

If your child suffers from enamel wear and tear because of teeth grinding (bruxism), orthodontics may be an effective way to save their smile. When the bite is misaligned (i.e., overbite) or teeth overlap, it can cause an uneven bite, so even chewing can lead to enamel erosion.

With the help of braces, though, teeth can be realigned so that they come together correctly, creating an even bite force. This reduces the potential for pressure to be placed on certain teeth, minimizing the chances of further wear and tear over time.

Can Orthodontics Treat Problems of Tooth Decay?

Yes, wearing braces can improve your child’s oral health. When teeth are gapped or overcrowded, they can be difficult to clean. Bacteria can become trapped, resulting in an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

If left untreated, the state of your child’s smile will worsen, requiring dental fillings, dental crowns, and in the most severe cases, tooth extraction.

However, with orthodontics, their teeth can be realigned accordingly so that additional space is provided to overcrowded areas, and gaps are closed when too much space exists. This creates a more cohesive and healthier environment, reducing your child’s chances of cavities and gingivitis.

Can Orthodontics Treat Jaw Pain?

Children who complain of chronic jaw pain may be suffering from temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD). When the joints, which are located on both sides of the jaw at the base of the skull, become inflamed as a result of damage, it can cause much pain throughout the head, neck, jaw, and shoulders.

If your child struggles to open their mouth, chew their food, or complains of earaches or clicking and popping when moving their jaw, TMJD is the likely culprit. This can be brought on by stress or commonly, bite misalignment.

With orthodontic treatment, though, their orthodontist can reposition the jaw and teeth so that they move into proper alignment over time. This will alleviate pressure on the jaw joints and allow for more fluid movement so that your child no longer experiences pain.

There are countless benefits to choosing orthodontics. Not only can they give your child the confidence to enjoy a more beautiful smile, but they can get to the root of their oral health problem and improve their quality of life.
